Our History
TWO DECADES OF MUSICAL EXCELLENCE
NVYS was founded with a simple belief — every young musician in Napa Valley deserves access to outstanding orchestral training, regardless of background or financial means.
Since its founding, NVYS has garnered many accolades, including recognition of achievement by United States Senator Barbara Boxer and multiple invitations to perform at Carnegie Hall.
2002
NAPA VALLEY, CALIFORNIA
NVYS is established
The Napa Valley Youth Symphony is founded, with a mission to give young musicians from diverse backgrounds the chance to grow through challenging, professional-level rehearsal and performance.
2008
NEW YORK CITY
A first tour to Carnegie Hall, and the founding of Sinfonia
NVYS embarks on its first tour, traveling to New York City to perform at Carnegie Hall. The same year, the orchestra establishes Sinfonia, an entry-level training ensemble for younger musicians.
2009
NAPA VALLEY, CA
A sister ensemble for wind and brass players
NVYS establishes Wind Sinfonia, extending the Sinfonia training program to wind and brass musicians.
2010
LOS ANGELES
Gold Award at the LA International Music Festival
NVYS performs at Walt Disney Concert Hall and wins top honors with a Gold Award at the LA International Music Festival.
2012
SALZBURG - VIENNA
A first international tour, and the Mahler Festival
NVYS embarks on its first international tour, performing in Salzburg and Vienna (Rabenstein) and at the International Mahler Festival.
2014
NEW YORK CITY
Unparalleled access to the New York Philharmonic
A return tour to New York City brings a young composers workshop with the New York Philharmonic, a seat in a closed Philharmonic rehearsal, and performances at the Central Park Band Shell and Carnegie Hall.
2016
IRELAND - ENGLAND
St. Patrick's Cathedral, York, and Westminster
NVYS tours Ireland and the United Kingdom, performing in St. Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin, at the University of York, and at St John's Smith Square in London.
