About the NVYS

Napa Valley Youth Symphony is an award winning youth orchestra, providing the highest level of musical training to young musicians and offering them the opportunity to enrich their community by performing seasonal, full-length concerts. In addition to its youth orchestra program, Napa Valley Youth Symphony also trains entry-level student musicians through string and wind ensembles, and provides educational programs to local schools and organizations. It is the only organization of its kind in Napa Valley.

The Napa Valley Youth Symphony ensembles perform a half-dozen major concerts per year and presents several master classes, education concerts, and chamber music concerts each season. The NVYS has garnered many accolades over the past few seasons, including recognition of achievement by United States Senator Barbara Boxer and an invitation to perform at Carnegie Hall. In 2010 the NVYS won top honors with a Gold Award at the Los Angeles International Music Festival, performing at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. In 2008 the Youth Symphony established an entry-level training orchestra named Sinfonia and in 2009 the Youth Symphony established a sister ensemble for Sinfonia called Wind Sinfonia for wind and brass players. For more information, click here.

Joining the Youth Symphony

Membership in the NVYS is open to highly qualified players of all orchestral instruments in the Napa Valley and surrounding areas. There is an upper age limit of 21 years old; there is no minimum age for either ensemble. Members are selected on the basis of an audition. Students are required to participate in school music programs when available. It is essential and highly recommended that students receive private instrumental instruction.

The NVYS trains students in the manner of a professional orchestra. Members are required to prepare their music, to arrive promptly, and to attend all rehearsals. Seating is by audition and seating auditions are held prior to each concert set. Tuition for the 2011-2012 season is $500. Parents are requested to help provide snacks for rehearsals and dinner for students on concert evenings.

Tuition covers only 20% of the NVYS's budget. No qualified musician will be excluded because of financial need. Financial assistance is available and can be in the form of outright scholarship grants, deferred payment plans, or fund-raising opportunities.
